Dog Tales

Geema
Everyone loves a good dog story, so I
have chosen to share two of the best tales of Pemberton Dogs from the
grooming table at Wag n'Wash.
First is the amazing journey of a five-pound Pomeranian/Shih-tzu
named Geema that was dog-napped in Burnaby while his owner was there on
a family visit.
I often see Geema at my shop for grooming, and one day last year
his owner told me how close we came to losing him to the black market
in the city, when he was stolen from the Burnaby family's yard and
driven to Chinatown to be re-sold. Geema's guardian angel must
have been watching because the RCMP happened to spot his abductor,
arrsted him on another charge, and took him to jail. They didn
know what to do with Geema, so they took him to the Vancouver city
pound. Only a chance phone call re-united him with his owner
after four agonizing days apart. It was a very happy reunion.
Geema is one of many dogs stolen for resale in the city. Thieves
even break car windows to snatch the pets inside. It is a
horrible thing to happen and Geema is a very lucky little dog to have
survived his dog-napping ordeal. He prefers not to ride in cars
any more, but will brave the experience if someone holds him really
close.
KATO
The next story starts a purebred White Shepherd named
Kato, and paints a picture that noone would expect to see in a
lifetime. His owner spotted Kato from a distace one day, dragging
something through the snow toward the hhouse. It must have been very
heavy and cumbersome, because he was having great difficulty and
stopped several times to rest. But Kato was determined to keep moving
with his prize. Finally, the owner saw a hoof, and realized that
the dog was bringing home a whole cow's leg! (The farmer next
door had butchered several cows and left the legs for wild animals).
She decided to let Kato get closer to the house so she could take
it away and dispose of it. Suddenly, out of the blue, an eagle
swooped down and grabbed the cow's leg in his strong talons. His
huge wings opened up for take-off, and suddenly the leg was airborne.
Kato was not about to let go after all his work, and the owner
watched in disbelief as a "tug-of-war" ensued between her dog and the
eagle. For a moment, the dog's front legs were lifted right off
the ground, before he eventually gaven up and the eagle made off with
his dinner.
